To get it out and onto paper, I thought I would write down what my typical weekday has been looking like of late.
For the purpose of this exercise, let’s take our favourite day of the week, the dreaded Monday (for some it’s a dreaded day, however for others it is a day for opportunity).
I’ll let you decide whether this is something I dread or take pride and absolute enjoyment out of.
Moving on, a typical day for me looks like this:
- 4:30 am – alarm goes off to wake up, smash half a bottle of water and do whatever business needs to be done in the you know what (that’s representing the “toilet”)
- 4:45 am – bag is packed, surfboards in the back of my car and on my way to the beach
- 4:55 – 5:00 am – check the surf at one of our local breaks
- 5:10 am – wetsuit is on (depending on the conditions if its windy and cold or board shorts if it’s warmer) and I’m sprinting down (let’s be honest, this early some mornings it’s more of a walk, especially if the sand is cold…)
- 7:00 am – get out of the surf, run up the beach and get changed
- 7:15 am – get home, unpack the boards and get breakfast prepared
- 7.30 am – cook / boil 4 eggs on 2 pieces of toast with a bunch of spinach and other vegetables. Depending how I’m feeling after getting up super early, I might have a coffee to wash down the breakfast meal, but I like to try and stay away from coffee for at least the first 3-4 hours in the morning to allow my body to wake up naturally.
- 7.50 am – pack my bag full of the food for the day, grab my clothes for work, pump up my bike tyres up and cycle to work
- 8:00 am – have a quick cold wash down shower at work, get changed and get stuck into whatever is on my plate for that day as this varies dramatically depending the work agenda
- 10-10:30 am 2nd meal of the day usually goes down the hatch
- 12:30 pm – take my lunch break and go for a solid walk around the block near my work, either make my daily phone calls catching up with friends and family, listening to a podcast or audiobook whilst walking or sitting down to read a book for half an hour
- 1:00 pm – back to work and getting all of what’s required for the afternoon done
- 2:30-3 pm 3rd meal for the day (variety of things)
- 5.00 pm – get changed back into my normal casual clothes and ride my bike home from work
- 5.30 pm – whip on my training / gym clothes and I get stuck into whatever training or workout I have planned for the day which could be from a variety of options like running, cycling, using the home gym, etc (more on that later)
- 7:00 pm – stretching after my vigorous workout and if I hadn’t done it by this stage of the day, I will aim to meditate following stretching for anywhere between 1 – 10 minutes on the mat in the garage (if I have the opportunity and the surf wasn’t good in the morning, I will complete the meditation practice on the beach or at home before starting the day)
- 7.30 pm – cold shower and as with the previous point, I will try and get another couple of minutes of meditation
- 7:45 pm – prepare dinner and sit down to eat without any distractions, prepare lunches for the next day and wash up. If there’s washing or other house hold chores to be done, these are usually completed in this block of time
- 8:30/9:00 pm – sit down and start writing out my daily journal, articles for my website / blog and any other items that I want to get out of my head and onto paper. This is also a crucial time for me to do any self-reflection of the day and do some high level planning of my goals and to see where I’m currently at.
- 10:00 pm – brush teeth, have my protein shake (5th meal), read for a short period of time in bed
- 10:15 – 10:30 pm – fast asleep
Currently, that’s pretty much what a typical day looks like for me at this moment in my life.
Note: I didn’t outline exactly what my food intake is like, but that I will try and cover down the track as it’s a lot. I’ve only briefly explained my breakfast as I consider it a pretty important meal.
Obviously, some days are dramatically different to what’s above, depending on other commitments, getting extra work done, the surf isn’t good in the morning, I may run or train in the morning. And as we’re all human, we tend to sleep in from time to time (what can I say, we’re not all perfect and I will never claim to be), may go for a walk along the beach, training or other commitments on the in the evening.
The list can go on forever of alternatives to this, but I have just outlined the average and most frequent setup of the daily activities that I’m involved in.
For me personally, and looking over it after writing it out properly in a methodical order, it’s mind boggling that I get to call this a standard day.
For a very long time in my life and throughout my childhood, never would I have thought that at 25 years old would I be able to complete all of those things above in the space of my 18 hours of awake time.
To be honest, I am unbelievably grateful for how I have been able to structure my life.
It’s definitely something that is overlooked a lot in our existence on earth, that many things sometimes just happen and work themselves out.
There are many variables and factors above, that even just slightly changed, like the location of where I worked, or motivation to be where I am, all has a huge impact on the overall trajectory and outcome.
For this I can say I am extremely grateful and blessed.
Let me know if you incorporate any of the above in your day?
