One thing I have gathered from working in the engineering industry is that when you get fired up about something whether it is in or outside your control, the best thing to do is:
Sleep on it and revisit it in the morning.
Whenever in a heightened emotional state, it is critical to remove yourself from the situation, walk away and come back to it at a later time when your senses have had a chance to reset and cool off.
The worst thing you can do is let yourself uncontrollably release outbursts of passionate outrage at a circumstance, to only realise that it is now working directly against you.
Not only is this applicable within the profession that I work in but it is extremely related to what happens in our personal lives.
If angry at a partner – provided you don’t live with her or him – sometimes it is just a better option to write out the text message while you’re angry but don’t send it.
The same with a client in the workplace.
Write the email but don’t send it.
Reread it in the morning and then decide whether the vocabulary is appropriate.
In the refreshed headspace I can guarantee some of the words and phrases you originally chose can be removed all together or swapped out for alternatives.
It works like a charm.
Although it feels great to get your notions across in the short term, the long term really suffers.
Just sleep on it and come back to it.
