#187 Productivity and public transport

You can listen passively to music or talk on the phone while driving to and from work but you can’t process complex calculations in a spreadsheet on a computer or write a creative, passionate narrative.

These tasks require attention, and sole attention not 50%.

Some context…

I spent a lot of time on public transport, especially trains, throughout my childhood, teenage, and early adult years.

It wasn’t until this morning I realised how effective I can be whilst sitting on a train being driven by someone else.

I’ve become so used to either driving or riding my bike commuting to work.

The reason for this is where we live, public transport isn’t feasible due to location and my training schedule.

This to the spark of this realisation, being back on a train and not having to drive to work.

Without scrolling social media unconsciously, or staring into the abyss of the outside world, I chose to write instead.

(Even though both are nice things to do and enjoy).

I strung together many sentences and felt pleased with about 45 minutes of uninterrupted, concentrated deep work.

Maybe I should start catching the train more often?
