When I heard the podcast episode from What You Will Learn about Mini Habits, I wrote a list of 4 things that I wanted to on a daily basis.
As a quick side not, the Podcast I mentioned above is something super worth checking out. I am currently in the process of writing a section for them and how much I appreciate the reviews of books they continually produce.
Also, the Mini Habits book by Stephen Guise, is an absolute weapon. It breaks down massive projects into miniature, bite sized systems that snowball into massive change.
They were wonderfully easy and wonderfully small.
They were:
- Do 1 burpee per day
- Read 1 page of a book per day
- Meditate for 1 minute per day
- Write 1 sentence for my website per day
The most important one on the list, I have found is the one I have in the past struggled the most with and that is writing 1 sentence per day.
Just by writing one sentence per day, I have become an avid writer, where I write for close to 2-3 hours every day / night now (some days more, some days less).
It may not be specific a topic or and idea, particularly around the structure of my website, but it’s a sentence.
It’s a sentence, good, bad or indifferent.
The things I write about include, an in-depth and reflective journal where I answer a range of questions to help trigger me into analysing that has happened throughout the busy day, articles on self-improvement, and my autobiography which I am trying to regurgitate all of which has happened to me.
It’s nothing short of mind blowing, that an absolutely minute task has led to discipline like no other.
Discipline has been the cornerstone of many of my core habits like exercising and reading but when it came to writing, it was avoided at all costs.
The most popular form was in a manifestation called procrastination.
Something all university students know all too well.
Cat videos of YouTube being one of the favourite forms of procrastination, that sweeps higher education students right off their feet (or should I say lectures).
In conclusion:
There isn’t much else to elaborate on here, only the idea that this tiny technique can be applied to 110% anything we seek out to do in our lives.
Write it down, put it on your bathroom mirror and just do it.
No excuses, make it as simple and small as possible
And of course, act accordingly – action it is.
